CEU eTD Collection (2014); Maracsko, Andras: Hungarian Orientalism and the Zichy expeditions

CEU Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2014
Author Maracsko, Andras
Title Hungarian Orientalism and the Zichy expeditions
Summary This thesis will reevaluate from a historical prospective the Oriental expeditions led by Jenő Zichy in 1895 and 1897-99. The primarily focus are on the travel diaries of Lajos Szádecky Kardoss, Béla Pósta, János Jankó and József Pápay. These diaries are juxtaposed with the scientific publications written by Zichy’s team in order to understand the scientific theories that influenced the members of the expeditions. Subsequently, the thesis will address issues relating to the fields of archeology, ethnography and linguistics. The thesis also investigates the influence of national Romanticism on the expeditions as well as the ways in which scientific knowledge was created by the scholars of the expeditions and how this knowledge was received in Hungarian scientific circles.
