Title | The Silent Voices Domestic Violence Against Romani Women Macedonia |
Summary | This thesis examines the barriers that hinder Romani women from reporting and seeking help when they encounter domestic violence in the context of Macedonia. For the purpose of this study I utilize intersectionality analysis of the Macedonian domestic violence law and policy in terms of intersectionality. I conducted twenty-two semi-structured interviews with Romani women victims of domestic violence, the representatives of Roma and non-Roma NGOs, and the staff from the Centres for Social Work. Relying on the findings from the analyzed domestic violence policy and law as well as the interviews, I argue that Romani women hesitate to report and seek help when they face domestic violence. I indicate that this is an outcome of neglect of their intersectional experiences by the mainstream service providers. The latter apply the universalistic approach “one size fits all” which often overlooks Romani women's individual needs and experiences. |
