Title | Good or Bad Agents? Western Fascination with Women and the Construction of Female Objects during the ISIS Crisis |
Summary | The West is frequently fascinated by women engaging in violence, either as soldiers in the military or as female members of terrorist organizations, who further challenge the traditional images of women as peaceful and non-violent. However, not all the women in combat are presented in the same manner and there are often hierarchical relations created between various images of female fighters by Western media. Especially, the emergence of Islamic State in Iraq and Syria has been in many ways described through the contrasting images of Kurdish female fighters and Western female migrants to ISIS, where Kurdish women have been labeled as active political agents whereas Western women joining ISIS were perceived as vulnerable and naïve teenagers. The purpose of this thesis is to engage into a discourse analyses of the media reports about the two groups of women affected by the ISIS conflict and further compare the created images, especially accounting for the different notions of agency, in order to further uncover the Western, Orientalist politics of representation. |
