| Title | Yugoslav "Women in Struggle": The Antifascist Women's Front, Agitprop and the Women's International Democratic Federation (1945-1952) |
| Summary | Abstract The Antifascist Women’s Front (Antifašistička fronta žena, AFŽ) was one of the Yugoslav mass organizations established during the war that continued its work in the post-war years. While the history and structure of the Antifascist Women’s Front was studied into detail, the broader political picture, which also had an impact on the organization, was neglected. Therefore, the main idea of this research is to observe the AFŽ’s work in relation to major political events that marked Yugoslav history in the period between 1945 and 1952. This research shows how political conflicts did not bypass AFŽ’s work. The main event, around which this thesis is developed, is the 1948 split between Tito and Stalin. Through this event the AFŽ’s work will be observed on a national and international level, that is, the way in which the AFŽ shaped and performed its tasks in relation to the two powerful organizations, the Yugoslav Agitprop sector and the Women’s International Democratic Federation. To present the work of AFŽ I rely on the archival documents of the Conference for the Social Activity of Women (Konferencija za društvenu aktivnost žena, KDAŽ) and the Yugoslav Agitprop archive for Croatia, as well as on the official AFŽ magazine Women in Struggle. These sources situate the Antifascist Women’s Front of Croatia into a broader political picture and through close reading of the documents and the magazine Women in Struggle present their activities and role of women’s organization in the post-war Yugoslavia. This analysis of the archival documents and published articles shows that the Antifascist Women’s Front was not under the strict control of the Yugoslav Communist Party, but rather that women’s mass organization was an active organization at the national and international level. |
