| Title | Facts and debates about the integration of the Hungarian Speaking Jews into Israeli society (1948-1955) |
| Summary | My thesis explores the integration of the Hungarian Jews into the Israeli society and their attachment Hungarian culture between 1948 and 1955. I argue that the Hungarian Jewish community existed in a dichotomy between Hungarian Jewish culture and the new Israeli cultural, social and political norms. Every – elite, institutional and individual – level of the community was committed to achieving full integration, however their attachment to Hungarian culture and values impeded this process. For this reason Hungarian speaking Jews‟ integration was cumbersome and it occurred differently in the various levels. While in the areas of the economy and ideology Hungarian Jews adapted to Israel, cultural and social transformation was not realized instantly. During my research I use four distinct types of primary source. One is the collection of the Hungarian embassy in Israeli, which is located in the National Archive of Hungary. The second is Hungarian newspapers and periodicals published in Israel during the analyzed period. Naturally Új Kelet [New East] is the most important of these newspapers. The third classes of sources are documents of different organizations of the Hungarian Jews in Israel. I have come into the possession of these documents in The Memorial Museum Of Hungarian Speaking Jewry located in Safed, Israel. The last category is personal accounts, like interviews, memoirs and letters which reflect certain individuals‟ experience. The last category of the personal accounts will be used mostly in the forth chapter, where I give further methodological explanations. |
