Author Pericas, Jaime Francisco
Title Suicide and Self-sacrifice in Spinoza's Philosophy
Summary In this thesis I aim to delve into the debate of Spinoza’s metaphysics with respect to the possibility or impossibility of suicide and —as a concomitant topic— self-sacrifice, and whether his statements are properly explained given his discursive abstractness. I explore his metaphysics of individual modes and the conatus theory by discussing both his epistemology and his theory of freedom. I argue that self-sacrifice can be conceived as a form of behavior that is systematically distinct from suicide and which can be described as a free or rational action in Spinozistic terms.
