Title FEMALE AND MALE NARRATIVES ABOUT FEAR OF VIOLENCE IN PUBLIC SPACE IN BISHKEK
Summary Statistically, men show low level of fear of violence and crime than women, although they are most likely to be victimized, especially in the public spaces. Likewise, women who are least likely to be victimized in the public sphere are more fearful than men. Most of the existing research on geography of fear focused on women’s fear of violence and its consequences in the lives of women, but men’s fears of violence was mostly neglected. The aim of this paper was to unpack this paradox using hegemonic masculinity as the conceptual framework of analysis. The main purpose was to gather narratives about fear of violence in public space in Bishkek and to do this, qualitative research methods were used in order to investigate the topic more in depth. Through the narratives of female and male college students, it is argued that fearlessness of violence in public space among men is subject to masculinity, whereas fear among women is due to unequal power relations.
