Title Life expectancy and gender gap in Russia: cross-regional variation
Summary The gender gap in life expectancy in Russia was the highest in the world in 2015, and the gender gaps varied across Russian regions by to 2.8 times in 2013. In this research the gender gap in life expectancy is explained with a variety of external and internal factors behind excess male mortality, and all of them are closely related to each other. Regions were grouped by values and growth rates of gender gap, and the outlier group of ethno-economies regions was identified. The time series and cross-regional regressions demonstrated robust strong negative association of life expectancy and its gender gap and strong positive association of mortality and the gender gap, while associations of the gender gap urbanization and female to male ratio were considered to be insignificant. Policy measures to address the problem of the gender gap in life expectancy are suggested.
