CEU eTD Collection (2016); Korbel, Stefan: Homines Sacri in European Refugee Crisis

CEU Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2016
Author Korbel, Stefan
Title Homines Sacri in European Refugee Crisis
Summary The thesis employs Agamben’s theoretical concept of homo sacer as a person of the ancient Roman law which can be killed but cannot be sacrificed. It argues that the refugees are the most exposed homines sacri in the ongoing European refugee crisis, which started escalating roughly in the spring of 2015. First, it demonstrates how the European policies and attitudes towards the refugees perpetuate their status of homines sacri. Second, it argues that the incapacity to satisfactorily manage the refugee crisis across Europe contributes to rise of far-right politics, and in line with Agamben’s argument, essentially uncovers the potentiality of the European citizens to also become homines sacri vis-à-vis the sovereign.
