| Title | Tracing modernization in the ottoman literature: the new ideal in ottoman turkish and armeno-turkish novels |
| Summary | The primary aim of this thesis is to use Ottoman literature to shed light on the “modernization” of the Ottoman Empire through different lenses. Since the Ottoman novels pursued all social-political hot-news; it is quite possible to follow crises, conflicts, and negotiations of the era in literary works. Another purpose of this study is to examine crucial social issues like gender roles, women’s lives in public and private spaces, and novels’ role in positioning the woman in the Ottoman society. With this respect, I argue literary productions of three different groups of writers; Ottoman Muslim male writers, Ottoman Armenian male writers, who penned Armeno-Turkish novels, and Ottoman Muslim female writers. I find Armenian writers more receptive regarding the westernized way of modernization while Muslim writers were struggling identity crises at the same time. The portraits of female characters also have an agency compared to literary works of the male Muslim writers. |
