Title | Examining the Role of Cleavages as a Determinant of Regional Party Support and the Consequences for Identitarian Representation in the Context of Multiple Identities: The Case of Valencia's Coalicio Compromis |
Summary | The purpose of this study is to examine the role of cleavages in determining regional party support in the Valencian Community, a region in Spain. This particular region has a diverse linguistic and historical tradition, leading to a profusion of different identities. By examining the support for a particular regional party, Coalició Compromís, through attitudinal surveys and other data compiled by the national and regional governments, this study seeks to offer an improved characterisation of the role of cleavages in an environment with multiple modes of identification. The results of this research demonstrate that while conventional social cleavages can be significant in determining support for a regional party, in the case of Valencia’s Coalició Compromís, the strength of these cleavages is strongly mitigated by cleavages based on identity and enforced by geographical circumstance. |
