| Title | Spirit Possession and Sacred Genealogy among Jordanian Bedouins: From Tribal Tradition to the Cyberspace |
| Summary | This thesis aims to find the relationship between oral traditions and sacred genealogy in a religious context. The thesis talks about the oral traditions, associated with spirits and exorcism, which transmitted from one generation to another. These traditions, which are confused for Islamic beliefs, are integrated to produce new Islamic representations and norms. Therefore, the thesis discusses how religions can be rich contexts to revive oral traditions, which also can sustain the new religious reforms according to traditions and not to the orthodox religion. The thesis concluded that oral traditions could be as strong as a religion if they were re-contextualised in a parallel religious context of orthodox religion. The thesis will refer to some video clips that are circulated in the public sphere, online and official programs. These video clips are chosen according to the number of the viewers or the contribution of the scholar in interpreting the religious text. This will intersect with an oral tradition that refers to sacred genealogy, humans married to spirits, both of the sender and receivers to this story are aware of this, which again, will intersect with some interviews I conducted in 2016 with some of the people who claim to be the descendants of the sacred genealogy. The thesis will present the oral tradition of spirits associated with the sacred genealogy in a religious context and its importance to religious reform to control the public sphere. |
