Title Building Climate-Resiliency in Water Management: A comparative case study on Californian and Australian Water Markets
Summary The effects of climate change, rising populations, and the corresponding developmental growth are putting a strain on fresh water supplies. This paper will examine the variability between climate-resilient water markets in California and Australia. Both areas share a number of key similarities including periods of multi-year droughts, state-owned water infrastructure, and mounting competition between agricultural and other water uses. Comparing these two water markets and surrounding policies will provide valuable insight on how market mechanisms have the potential to encourage more efficient water allocation, government regulation, and trading processes. Supported by Rational Choice Intuitionalism and water trading records dating back 30 years, findings [are expected to] show how certainty in water rights and available water on hand to sell leads to more frequent use in water markets, less risk of environmental issues from overdraft, better evaluation of water values based on supply, less political obstruction from municipalities, and quicker government monitoring procedures.
