Title "I Pledge Allegiance to:" A New Type of Terrorism
Summary Terrorism is a concept that affects every aspect of a person’s life in many countries around the world, and after September 11, 2001 this became especially true for the American people and the United States’ government. The phrase, one man’s terrorist is another man’s freedom fighter has been used for over forty years. While old habits can be hard to break, scholars, governments, intelligence agencies, and law enforcement need to acknowledge that the terrorist attacks carried out in the United States do not apply to any of the existing types of terrorism. These attacks have indicators from both lone wolf terrorism and terrorist networks, but also contrast greatly in their objectives, tactics, level of affiliation and autonomy. This thesis argues that the threat is bandwagon terrorism, and it exists because of the spider’s web network of a hybrid netwar established by the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria and al-Qaeda.
