Title Ottoman Istanbul: Modernization, Cinematography and Women (1896-1923)
Summary This study is an attempt to seek how cinematography opens a new space for Ottoman women where they can experience modernization and where they become active agents of modernization by changing the city structure. This thesis is an attempt to trace women’s path from their private spheres to the cinemas in the late Ottoman İstanbul. By being a company of women’s daily venture in the city, the thesis aims to find the role of Ottoman flaneuse in modernization process of the Empire. The analysis of regulations on cinema, the 19th C. novels, and the women’s magazines are the guidelines of the thesis. Ottoman flaneuse modernizes İstanbul by becoming a part of entertainment life, mobilizing city centers and consuming new cultural practices.
