Title The Politics of Repression in Contemporary Russia: Protests of 2011-2013 and Methods of Suppression
Summary The rise of new authoritarian regimes, the decline of democracy, the pressure on the free press, the murders and kidnapping of journalists, war and repression - all this are very important factors of the last decade. At the same time, many elements of the hybrid regimes are scarcely explored and poorly described. One of these factors is repression, the logic and the reasons for which have not yet been studied sufficiently. This problem is also a result of fact that contemporary researchers are missing a number of aspects related to repression strategies and often fail to understand the logic behind the repressive actions.
Contemporary Russian regime can serve as a good example for establsishing a cause-effect relationship of certain decisions relating to repression in hybrid regimes. In Russia, after the protests of 2011-2012 pressure on civil society organizations, NGOs and political activists severely intensified; in many cases the reasons of repression stayed ambiguous. For investigation of this process I want to conduct a qualitative research devoted to the puzzle of repression in modern Russia and methods of its implementation.
