Summary The Seljuk Turks migrated from Central Asia to Anatolia in the eleventh century. In the beginning of the twelfth century conglomerates of pastoralists group controlled the core territory of the Byzantine Asia Minor. This dissertation studies the emerging collective identity of the Turks as the groups in the Byzantine rhetoric.
