Title Legal Avenues To Tackle Involuntary Sterilization Of Roma Women In Central-Eastern Europe
Summary Involuntary sterilization of Roma women in the Czech Republic, Hungary and Slovakia are a remain of a particular social policy of the Socialist era and a manifestation of systemic bias against women of this ethnic group. The thesis focuses on cases arising from the early 2000’s and examines possible legal avenues – civil, criminal and international – from the point of view of their effectiveness in stopping the human rights violation and fostering attitudinal changes in the society. The analysis draws from the experience of attorneys representing the cases at domestic and international courts and academic literature regarding the law and practice of the European Court of Human Rights in anti-Roma violence cases.
