Title | Friend or foe? The Micro Perspectives on Support for Violent Separatist Rebellion in Ukraine |
Summary | What compels individuals to provide support to secessionist movements, despite risks to life and livelihood? Why does violence break out in a relatively prosperous region? How do separatist rebellions endure despite deep economic hardships experienced by the populations in such places? This thesis takes up the challenge of assessing Paul Collier’s macro-level theory of conflict onset with micro-level interview and social media data. Collier’s main argument focuses on feasibility as the main variable which determines conflict onset. However, since the author uses aggregate-level cross-country data causal conflict processes prove to be elusive in his research. This thesis makes use of a unique multi-method approach to analysing qualitative and quantitative data collected at the micro-level to analyse population support for separatist rebellion in the Donbas, Eastern Ukraine. The thesis tentatively validates Collier’s findings while contributing new insights not visible at the macro-level of analysis. |
