Title Parental Leave Policies in Japan and South Korea: Writing Fathers into Carework Policies - Impacts, Barriers, Lessons Learned & Best Practices
Summary This paper analyses new innovations in parental leave, specifically regarding father-specific policies in South Korea and Japan. While these countries offer some of the most generous leave globally, this is juxtaposed to the significantly low uptake numbers. Through an understanding of the context in which these policies emerged, a detailed overview of the policies is provided in order to evaluate how to increase the uptake of the policies across three criteria; generosity, eligibility and redistributive capacity. A number of policy recommendations are provided to help improve the uptake of these policies.
