| Title | Art, Defined in Struggle: Socialist Realism Inside the Ukrainian Union of Artists from the 1950s through Perestroika |
| Summary | The main focus of this research is the definition of socialist realism and its institutional implementation in Soviet Ukraine, which is approached from the perspective of Bourdieu’s field analysis. The outset of the study is Perestroika when the official method of Soviet art lost its ability to embrace its relationship with the past and the present and further was not able to maintain its cultural legitimacy in the artistic field. In order to comprehend how this change occurred, this study traces the legitimate definitions of art and the artist from the early Thaw when the necessity to redefine socialism realism in correspondence with “contemporary issues” emerged. |
