Title "We are Glad that the Germans are with us and not our "Dearest and Favorite" Government": the Holocaust and Collaboration in the South of Russia, 1941-1944
Summary My thesis contributes to the field of the Holocaust and Genocide Studies by asking for the motives of collaborators to participate in the Nazi atrocities of 1941-1944 in the Soviet Union, and particularly in the understudied southern region of Russia. This thesis seeks to demonstrate that the Holocaust in these ethnically diverse areas was distinct in several respects from the mass murders perpetrated in Eastern Europe. This study also examines the subject of collaboration on various levels: not only in the massacres themselves, but also in the military and in daily life under the occupation. The primary sources for this study are interviews with local witnesses that were conducted in the 1990–2000s and were mostly not used before by historians.
