Title | The Temperance Movement: Alcohol and Politics in fin-de-siecle Russia |
Summary | This MA thesis is devoted to the history of the temperance movement in Russia in the late 19th- early 20th centuries. The focus of the work is made on a comparative study of religious temperance organizations in the imperial capital and the provincial city of Kazan. This center-periphery investigation contributes to the study of social and political dynamics in the imperial space, and aims at understanding the goals, rhetoric, the activities of local social organizations and the public sphere. As I argue here, the temperance movement was politicized in the Russian empire and its actors used a discourse about sobriety to assert their own interests and reform agendas. |
