Title The Virtual Other: Negotiating Personhood in the Digital Age
Summary The rapidity with which new technologies emerge has considerable impact on the ability of scholars to construct new meanings about concomitant shifts in behavior, consumption, communication, and representation. Despite the growing body of sociological and anthropological literature that translates frameworks for understanding social dynamics from analogue into digital, there is still much to be learned about how the current technological moment impacts our understanding of the relationship between the individual and society. My case study is about CGI Instagrammers’ audience interaction with CGI Instagrammers, which I conduct in order to analyze how, and possibly why, categories of the and person manifest online and how they emerge in relation to the social and economic conditions that make it possible.
