| Title | Why Do We Need the Comparison With the San Remo Festival The Birth of Yugoslav Zabavna Music Under the Italian Influence |
| Summary | In the first ten years of socialism Yugoslavia passed through radical political, economic and cultural change. Tito’s historical “no” to Stalin did not mean an immediate split with dogmatic practices, but in long terms it influenced the change of Yugoslav ideology. Two things were crucial: the introduction of self-management and opening to the Western countries. The first caused liberalization of the cultural sphere and “democratization” of music, but also introduced commercialism in the spread of cultural goods. Light forms of entertainment were slowly accepted throughout the 1950s in Yugoslavia while a liberalized cultural policy increased the influx of Western music. While musicians and composers copied foreign popular songs, performing them in original language or translated, structures that were close to the official policy worked toward the creation of Yugoslav national style of popular music. Only in the mid-1950s did zabavna music, as a national genre, become established. The radio orchestras had an important role in its birth, but actually the creation of various festivals was the sign of the true acceptance of the light music genre. The Opatija Festival was especially important, considered as all-Yugoslav musical celebration where all republics and ethnicities, including minorities, were represented. The promotion of Yugoslavia as a Mediterranean country could be seen in the representation of the motives in the popular music. Italy served as a perfect role model because of its closeness and historical connections. The world-famous San Remo Festival influenced Yugoslav culture on several levels. It did not bring only a certain type of music and style of performance, but also popularity, fashion and glamour with all their positive and negative sides. |
