| Title | Ancient Virtues in New Nations: A Comparative Analysis of Classical Reception and Republicanism during the Independence Processes of Colombia and Greece |
| Summary | After the silence of the guns in Waterloo, the ideals of the French Revolution and its intellectual apparatus that effected the reception of the classical Greco-Roman tradition in the dawn of the contemporary era, were exported to contexts outside Europe. Using the cases of Colombia and Greece, I intend to establish links between the European context of the early nineteenth century and its periphery as a field of research opportunity and build bridges between national historiographies and the possibility of a global discourse of the historical past. This is a comparative exercise of two historical experiences separated in space and historical evolution but united by the ideals proposed and re-used during the first stage of their conformation as independent nations. For this, the use of the old republicanism and its civic virtues in the construction of a civic and political apparatus during the independence struggle and the constitutional formation of Greece and Colombia will be analyzed. Outlining thus, the fundamental guidelines of the historiographic problem of these post-Napoleonic wars and the fundamental importance of the classic reception in the genesis of these two independent states. Accordingly, this work would turn around these following inquiries: the impact of classical antiquity in the political languages of both revolutions; the development of republicanism as a political idea from its conception through its adaptation and implementation efforts in these independence processes; and finally, how a comparison of the independence of Greece and Colombia could help to expand the historiographical spectrum of the Age of Revolutions period though the visualization of these analogous historical processes. |
