Title Translating the Incommensurable
Summary The topic of this thesis is the problem of semantic incommensurability between languages. My aim is to provide an argument that plausibly disassociates the incommensurability of languages from their untranslatability. I consider the idea of these notions being connected to be a misapprehension to which much of the contemporary debate falls prey. Towards the stated purpose, I argue for the inclusion of Friedrich Schleiermacher in this modern debate and subsequently construct an argument meant to drive a wedge between incommensurability and untranslatability. I do so in the following way: (1) I argue for the translatability of incommensurable languages and (2) I argue that translatability does not entail commensurability. Finally, I argue that Schleiermacher is ultimately inconsistent but that the argument I have constructed based on his account of translation does not fall along with him.
