Title | Translating the Incommensurable |
Summary | The topic of this thesis is the problem of semantic incommensurability between languages. My aim is to provide an argument that plausibly disassociates the incommensurability of languages from their untranslatability. I consider the idea of these notions being connected to be a misapprehension to which much of the contemporary debate falls prey. Towards the stated purpose, I argue for the inclusion of Friedrich Schleiermacher in this modern debate and subsequently construct an argument meant to drive a wedge between incommensurability and untranslatability. I do so in the following way: (1) I argue for the translatability of incommensurable languages and (2) I argue that translatability does not entail commensurability. Finally, I argue that Schleiermacher is ultimately inconsistent but that the argument I have constructed based on his account of translation does not fall along with him. |
