| Title | Managing the Differences: Sociology of Stratification in Czechoslovakia and in Poland (1956-1970) |
| Summary | The thesis discusses the emergence of sociology of stratification in Czechoslovakia and in Poland between 1956 and 1970. It argues that for the development of the research in the area the context of international cooperation and rivalry was crucial. Czechoslovak and Polish sociologist developed their idea within frames of selective (sometimes critical) reception of the Western theoretical and methodological currents in sociology and social thought. Equally important was the context of the changing political situation in each of those countries. Different strategies of de-Stalinization of those countries resulted in divergent development of the discipline in Czechoslovakia and in Poland. The need for some reconstruction of the society after the death of Stalin, and in a new economic reality connected with the completion of the process of industrialization resulted in the works of sociologist moving towards social engineering. The main objective of the thesis is to investigate the premises of such social engineering present in some main currents of sociological approaches to stratification, including the interpretation of the current state of socialist construction as well as a vision of well-organized society. |
