| Title | Farce After Velvet: Satirical Programmes in the First Years of Czech Public Television |
| Summary | In the thesis, I analyse the post-socialist satirical production which ran on the Czech public service television in the 1990s. Firstly, I investigate the changes which were taking place in the field of television organisation and production and attend to outline how these changes were reflected in the public debates. Secondly, the thesis seeks to shed light on the genealogy of particular kind of satirical performances by looking at the cultural milieu of Prague amateur theatre groups. It then elaborates on how these groups entered the field of television and film production and what were the factors providing that the alternative creative practice was given support and space in the Czech television programme scheme. My theoretical perspective is shaped by the approaches of production studies and I namely apply the concepts of social and cultural mediation when inquiring into the production context. I complement the analysis by accounting for the situated aesthetics and ethics of the programmes under study. A particular theoretical relevance is given to the consideration of satirical genre and its critical contribution to the post-socialist democratic practice. The thesis stresses the relevance of post-socialist television satirical formats by arguing that the analysed programmes provided an unsettling reading of the post-socialist media representations and addressed the ambiguities and discrepancies of the contemporary public discourses. |
