| Title | The Prophet of Countryside: An Intellectual Biography of Mile Budak |
| Summary | This thesis attempts to reconstruct the intellectual biography of Mile Budak. While stressing his role as one of the leading figures of the Ustasha Movement, a terrorist group of Croatian nationalists that established a fascist regime in 1941, the existing scholarship frequently notes the importance of Mile Budak in disseminating the ideology of the organization. In order to engage with Budak’s ideological and political activities, this study will utilize a bipartite structure, dedicated to Budak’s political writings and speeches and to his literary production respectively. Doing so, this research will focus on the process of radicalization of politics in interwar Yugoslavia, as well as Europe, underlining Budak’s role in the process. In addition, I will argue that the two overarching questions for intellectuals in Central and Eastern Europe, including Mile Budak, were those of modernization and the role of the nation-states. Moreover, I suggest that not all of Budak’s answers to those questions included extremism. While the process of radicalization can be traced in his political discourse, the same cannot be stated for his literary works. These findings suggest that the radicalization in political and cultural or artistic spheres are not necessarily correlated. |
