Title Identity in the Presevo valley, a qualitative research on young people's experiences
Summary Located in the south of Serbia, the Preševo valley is home to the country’s small ethnic-Albanian minority. The generation that grew up in the valley after the ethnic conflicts, which marked the region two decades ago, is growing into adulthood. This thesis investigates how young ethnic-Albanians from the Preševo valley experience their identity. A qualitative research, based on semi-structured interviews, explores how they relate to their Albanian ethnic identity and the Serbian and Kosovar national identities. Although they have Serbian citizenship, they feel hardly attached to the Serbian national identity. Rather, they feel connected with Kosovo, with whose population they share the Albanian ethnic identity. However, they do not feel fully included in the Kosovar national identity either. As such, some experience a feeling of abandonment.
