Title | The Role of Development Aid in Conflict Transformation: An Analysis of the Donor Landscape in Post-Conflict Aleppo |
Summary | The role of development aid in conflict transformation has been a core discourse in the field of international development. In 2012 the Syrian Conflict reached the city of Aleppo, plunging the city into a protracted armed conflict. The escalation of violence coupled with the grave humanitarian catastrophes and destruction, brought much international attention to the Conflict. The aid donor community mobilized its efforts to respond to the Conflict, through humanitarian relief and development assistance. This thesis analyzes the development assistance in Aleppo in the period during the Battle of Aleppo (2012-2016) and in the ‘post-conflict’ phase (2016 and beyond). It addresses the notion of aid neutrality and the targeting of aid through societal cleavages. This research finds that the changes in the framework of development assistance was highly contingent upon the timing and evolution of the Conflict, and that donor strategies were highly organization/donor specific. |
