| Title | Spontaneous Generation in the Context of Eighteenth-Century Life Sciences |
| Summary | This project is dedicated to the study of the relations between eighteenth-century life sciences and ideas of spontaneous generation. During this period of time, microscopic research brought up the issues of life and generation of small creatures that were unknown or neglected in the preceding era. This enquiry also helped the naturalists to learn about the details of generation of already known living beings. Asexual generation got a special place among these discoveries since it challenged the existing beliefs about nature. The naturalists who worked on the theories of generation adopted the discourse of spontaneous generation as a model for their theories. This invasion caused dramatic shifts in understanding the mechanisms of reproduction, the relation between the body and the soul, and agency of nature. In this thesis, I reconstruct the relations between the naturalist enquiry and the attempts to create a unifying metaphysical basis for unconventional generation. |
