Title Why not from tap? The role of reward in the deposit system for still water from single-use bottles in Germany
Summary In the search for reasons of why people consume still, bottled water, where tap water is cheap and its quality is excellent, this thesis investigates the role of the deposit system for single-use bottles in Germany to inform more sustainable policies. Based on the observation that people who return their bottles to a designated deposit machine feel rewarded, this study reveals that the reward feeling of the participants is primarily tied to the deposit fee that they receive. Through an integrated quantitative and qualitative assessment (N=650) it is found that the main driver for people feeling rewarded and for them returning the bottles is the deposit fee. By testing two modified deposit fee scenarios, the respective treatment group that receives back more money than what they initially paid, would increase their consumption of bottled water even more.
