| Title | "Foreign" Pharmacists and the Dissemination of Medical Knowledge in St. Petersburg in the Early Nineteenth Century |
| Summary | This thesis discusses the pharmaceutical community that was developing in 1800-1820 in St. Petersburg, the capital of the Russian empire. There are several layers of this exploration: first of all, this paper examines various aspects of urban medicine such as state regulations, topography and statistics regarding pharmacy shops in the city as important evidence of increasing concern about “public health” of the population. Secondly, the thesis contests the idea of backward Russian medicine and illustrates the complexity of processes that were happening while the pharmaceutical industry was forming. The last significant side of this discussion is people themselves – workers of the pharmaceutical industry. The research binds together all these layers to contribute to the social history of medicine approach. These aspects are essential to understand how the community was working, what positions in social and professional hierarchies pharmacy holders occupied and how this case reveals broader issues of knowledge transfer, professionalization and illustrate that professions that were united under the term “medical” were quite unlike each other. |
