Title | The Image Of Eastern Europe In Postmemory Discourse |
Summary | This thesis examines trauma representation in literature written by the generation of postmemory on the topic of the Holocaust. The main problem in this field of studies is the lack of testimonies given by the second and third generation of Holocaust survivors on their trauma. The interdisciplinary analysis proves to be fruitful when working with literary testimonies, taking into consideration their complexity. The literary embodiment of the combination of historical events, personal trauma and autobiographical elements leads to the deformation of the existing genres and emergence of the hybrid ones, opening a new approach to writing trauma literature. Literature, in its turn, is a source of knowledge about long-lasting effect of the Holocaust both in the situation of silencing, in case of the generation of postmemory, and for general reader. The root journey to Eastern Europe undertaken by the descendants is perceived by them as a direct way to filling the knowledge gaps produced by the long silence of the survivors. |
