Title | Rethinking Rights Beyond Liberalism: A Radical Democratic Critique of Liberal Rights |
Summary | The rise of ‘illiberal’ regimes and their corresponding leaders globally, have brought to the forefront the centrality and importance of the meaning of rights. Given the importance and significance of a rights-based discourse in contemporary political discourse, the aim of the thesis to offer a coherent criticism of the liberal conceptualization of rights by using the framework of radical democratic theories. A fundamental consideration for the thesis while doing this, is to not completely disregard or do away with a rights-based discourse. Instead, the thesis hypothesizes that the liberal understanding of rights has limitations of applicability and that there is a need for a reformulation of rights which does not solely base itself on liberalism. Using the criticism offered against liberal rights by radical democratic theories, the thesis makes a positive argument to reformulate a rights-based discourse in the light of the newer forms of claim-making that are occurring globally. |
