Title Danger in the Byzantine Countryside: A Case Study of Gregory the Cellarer's The life of Lazaros of Mt. Galesion
Summary This study intends to reread Gregory the Cellarer’s The Life of Lazaros of Mt. Galesion to trace the dangers common people faced in the rural Byzantium, while it attempts to explore the textual meaning and function of these dangers in the account. Divided into three main categories, it focuses on nature-related risks, corporeal threats, and societal dangers. This thesis argues that the Byzantine countryside was an insecure environment: people were exposed to and cause dangers, but also sought ways and means of solutions. The authorial motivation of Gregory to refer such problems is to contextualize the world around Lazaros and underscore his sanctity.
