| Summary | The primary aim of the thesis is to review and analyze three examples of grand literary narratives in early twentieth-century European prose fiction, and to compare them with selected contemporaneous theories of the novel as genre. Through this the thesis would like to contribute to not only the present theoretical discourse, but also to the debate on the connection between history and artistic form. |
