Title Homeland Identity and Assimilation in the Mahjar Press: The case of The Syrian World
Summary In the literature on how different ethnic groups became to be classified as white in the United States during the early 20th century, the case of Arab-Americans has only very recently been addressed in comparison. This thesis aims to provide an analysis of the discourse within The Syrian World, a journal which was in circulation during this time and the contributions of its editor in order to provide a focused account on the topic of identity among Syrian immigrants to the United Stated in the early 20th Century. It argues that a certain myth of identity known as Phoenicianism was adopted by the Syrian community as it provided them with a shared heritage with European groups while also offering them a glorified version of the homeland of which they could identify with.
