Title | Has Covid-19 Sparked Asian Employment Discrimination in the U.S labor market? |
Summary | Ongoing pandemic gave rise not only to economic challenges all over the world, but also to deep-rooted societal issue of discrimination. Covid-19 has also been called “Asian Virus”, “Chinese Virus” and as a result, many incidents of discrimination and harassment against Asians were reported over the last year. Considering the fact that millions of jobs were lost in the US in the face of Covid-19 and blame put on Asians, I seek to examine whether Asians were hit disproportionally with regards to job losses and whether Asian discrimination is reflected in the US labour market. In order to do my analysis, I use CPS dataset from January 2019 to March 2021. Statistical analysis is carried out with Stata and results show no statistically significant Asian discrimination has been observed in labour market in contrast to previous research on this topic. Policy recommendations are then provided to U.S. Department of Labor on how potential discrimination in labour market can be minimized. |
