Title | Appraisal of COVID-19 Response in Nigeria: The Role of Test Data in Response Strategy |
Summary | The aim of the thesis is to examine Nigeria’s handling of the recent public health challenge – COVID-19 pandemic. The country has witnessed a coupled of diseases of public health significance in recent years. From Ebola Virus Disease (EVD), Cholera to Lassa Fever, the country’s response and surveillance system has been tested on many occasions. However, COVID-19 crisis response and management presented a different level of challenge. The global dimension to the crisis calls for a lot of coordination and collaboration between the Federal Government and the States on the one hand, and among the various agencies on the other hand. For decision-makers, access to critical information such as testing, accurate number of fatalities, available ICU beds etc. is central to effectiveness and choice of response strategy. The study examines critical data as reported by the health agencies, data availability, testing facilities and contact tracing on the nature of government responses the crisis. At the end of the thesis, recommendations are made towards improving crisis preparedness and response framework in the country. It is believed that improved investment in the health sector, especially in laboratory facilities, would strengthen the public health system and its ability to respond to disease outbreaks in future. This would also expand the sector’s capacity to save lives and resources as a result of timely and better response strategy. |
