Title Measuring the Impact of Typhoons on Different Social and Economic Outcomes in the Philippines
Summary The Philippines experiences multiple natural disasters each year, with typhoons being the most prevalent and damaging in terms of social and economic impact. This paper aims to measure the effect of typhoons on critical dimensions of human development in the Philippines by exploiting the exogeneity and randomness of Typhoon Washi. Using a difference-in-differences approach, the paper examines both the long and short term effects of this particular typhoon on unemployment, primary education dropout and infant mortality in a region that has historically been free of typhoons. Results show a significant increase in unemployment over the long term, while primary education dropout showed a significant increase immediately after the typhoon. Although the effect on infant mortality increased in the short term and decreased in the long term, these estimates are not statistically significant. In terms gender-specific outcomes, I find that the effect on girls are higher than that of boys in education and health.
