Title | Building a Recommendation System for Banks |
Summary | The aim of this Capstone Project was to assist the Client – a company in the financial sector – in building a recommendation system for one of its clients from the banking sector. The purpose of the system was to help this company with offering more personalized services and boost sales as a result. My tasks were to provide proposals regarding the methodology, develop a data model and to build a recommendation system using the chosen method which could identify products that a client would most likely purchase. As a result of the methodology research I could identify 4 different types of recommendation systems currently trending on the market. I also described validation metrics for them as well as some use-cases from the banking sector. Based on the use-cases I decided to build a clustering and popularity-based recommendation system. To be able to do this I had to define two datasets: one with clients and the products they purchased and one with client information. I had to generate product categories and pick client features to complete this step. By using the two datasets I built two models: one that used all the product categories for recommendations and one that excluded one of the product groups. The second model gave much more realistic results than the first one. In addition, it performed better than a random guess as well as when recommending the overall top 5 most popular products for all the clients. I believe that my results can be of use to the Client in two ways. The first one is that they can apply the same preparatory and model building steps in their own project. While the second one is that they can incorporate some of the logic of my work in their own recommendation system. |
