| Title | A View of the Fuehrer through the Lens of Nazi Popular Cinema |
| Summary | My thesis is about the portrayal of leaders in Nazi popular cinema. It identifies four aspects which are seen in every leader and genius figure in films made during the Third Reich. The surety of the appearance of these characteristics in all movies which center around a leader is due to them being characteristics which Nazi propagandists claimed Adolf Hitler had. Additionally, there are no movies made during the Nazi era in Germany in which an actor plays Hitler, so characters act as stand-ins for the actual Führer. Of the films covered in my thesis, all are either adaptations of previous works or are fictionalizations of real historical characters. The reason for this decision seems partly to be due to a desire to alter creative works and even historical fact so that they too can spout Nazi ideology. By doing this, a sense of legitimacy is given to the regime as well as a feeling of continuity. Another big reason for this choice has to do with inserting propaganda into familiar forms which a German audience may be more receptive towards. |
