| Title | Towards Utopian Communism: Writing for Children in Soviet Lithuania (1964-1989) |
| Summary | This research aims to look afresh at children’s literature in Soviet Lithuania between 1964-1989 and provide an insightful account on the literary field and its peculiarities. By adopting the literary field theory developed by Pierre Bourdieu, I am to provide a new approach for understanding Soviet children’s literature and its status within the Soviet project towards utopian communism. I examine children’s literature from two different angles. First, I analyze administrative body of Soviet institutions responsible for the literary and publishing matters. Second, I examine the content of children’s books published during the research period. I determine the main Soviet morals and concepts which I aim to indicate in children’s books through critical content analysis. In this research I argue that Soviet Lithuanian children’s literature existed in the margins of the general Soviet cultural field. Also, I argue that such peripheral position was beneficial for Soviet authors to explore more topics. By merging the two aspects (administrative/structural body) and content of children’s books I am to provide an innovative approach to children’s literature studies. |
