Title | Values In The Time Of Crisis: Analysing Political Value Change In The European Union Values In The Time Of Crisis: Analysing Political Value Change In The European Union Values in the Time of Crisis: Analysing Political Value Change in the European Union |
Summary | The impact of crises on values is a topic which is frequently touched upon in political science, but rarely dealt with explicitly. This thesis aims to contribute to the discussion and help to bridge that gap, by taking both a theoretical and an empirical approach to the question of how crises impact values, looking especially at the European context during the period 2008-2018. This thesis has two fundamental aims: firstly, to develop a clear conceptualization of values as a distinct unit of analysis; and, secondly, to analyse how values change during crisis periods, by using European Values Study data. Through statistical analyses, it is tested whether values have changed significantly during the crisis period between Wave 4 and Wave 5, and whether this has had a particularly strong effect on in countries which can be categorised as under a higher level of ontological security threat. |
