Author Elliott, John James
Title Anscombe and 'I': A New Interpretation and Analysis of G.E.M. Anscombe's 'The First Person' (1975)
Summary Very succinctly, this dissertation constitutes a new interpretation and analysis of G.E.M. Anscombe’s ‘The First Person’ (1975). In particular, of that paper’s central thesis - that ‘"I" is neither a name nor another kind of expression whose logical role is to make a reference, at all’ (Anscombe, 1975: 32) - and the related notion that self-consciousness is ‘subjectless’ (Anscombe, 1975: 36).
