Title Chip-ing Away at Globalization: The Deglobalization of the Semiconductor Industry as a Result of Geoeconomics
Summary In the last decade, the People’s Republic of China, the United States of America, and the European Union have all passed policies and legislation prioritizing the localization and deglobalization of their semiconductor sources. These semiconductor industrial policies typically rely on direct financial assistance from the state, incentivization of foreign direct investment (FDI), and protectionist measures such as trade barriers and restrictions on inbound FDI, in order to accomplish the issuing government’s stated goals. This investigation seeks to prove that the often aggressive and protectionist actions by these major powers is the result of the increasing securitization of the semiconductor industry and economics as a broader phenomenon. Geoeconomics is used to explain how these countries have utilized economic policies, relating to semiconductors, in order to achieve their respective long-term geopolitical goals.
