Title Kant's Reciprocity Thesis as a Response to Schelling's Critique of the Idealist Conception of Freedom
Summary In this thesis, I reconstruct Schelling's critique of Kant's conception of freedom and give a Kantian reply. I begin my tracing a typical understanding of Kantian freedom followed by a series of early critiques of his position, including Schelling. I examine recent scholarship on Schelling's critique of Kant's position before giving my own interpretation of what I imagine to be a Kantian reply to Schelling. By positing "moral freedom" through a close reading of Kant's reciprocity thesis, I show that Kant adequately answer's Schelling's charge that his conception of freedom cannot account for the possibility of evil.
